Plane: open-source project management you can host yourself

An alternative to Jira, Linear and ClickUp that you can run on your own server.

Business1 min read

Plane is a project management tool for tasks, sprints, documents and triage. It positions itself as an open-source alternative to Jira, Linear, Monday and ClickUp.

Why it matters

Most small teams pay for features they never use. A tool you can host yourself puts the data and the cost in your hands.

The facts

  • Project: makeplane/plane on GitHub
  • Stars: over 62,000 (as of 7 November 2026)
  • Main language: TypeScript
  • It is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence.
  • Website: http://plane.so

Before you install it

Its licence is AGPL, which asks you to share your changes if you offer a modified version to others as a service. That is fine for internal use, but read it before you build on top of it.

I read the project page and its description to write this. I have not audited the code, so treat it as a pointer, not a recommendation to trust it with anything sensitive.
