Make your AI hold a real conversation: the rules I added
Questions and jokes that wait for your answer, follow-ups built from your own words, and remembering yesterday.
Most AI assistants answer, and stop being interesting. The problems I noticed in mine were small and annoying:
- It asked a question and then answered it itself.
- It told a joke setup and delivered the punchline in the same breath.
- When I answered its question, it said "got it" and changed the subject.
- It forgot what we talked about last week.
Why this happens
Conversation has structure. A question is only half of an exchange, and the other half is yours. Researchers who study conversation call these pairs: the first part sets up an expectation, and the exchange is not finished until the second part arrives. A model that treats every message as a standalone answer breaks that structure.
The fix has three parts
First, rules about turns: set up, stop, wait. Second, rules about listening: follow up on the detail the person just gave, not on a new topic. Third, memory: a short log of past days, and a way to look further back. None of this changes the assistant's personality. It changes how it talks, not who it is.
